  • F.E.A.R 2 Project Origin

    Here's Zeneye's ranking system:

    Graphics: 8/10
    Sound: 8/10
Gameplay: 10/10 (lots of variety and tons of really good spooky stuff)
    Replay value: 6/10
    Overall: 8/10

If you've read my review of the original F.E.A.R games, then you'll imagine why I was so excited when this game came out. A quick summary: you are thrust back into the storyline of the original F.E.A.R. about 30 minutes before ending finale. You play a different character from the original game interestingly enough, but you soon acquire the ability to do F.E.A.R's signature "Matrix-Like" slo-mo abilities in combat.

There are a ton of different styles of play thrown into this. Sometimes its just atmospheric and spooky noises leave you on the edge of your seat. Sometimes you're running through a dark building being attacked by supernatural terrors on all sides that you can barely see much less shoot at. Other times its good straight-forward combat-troop assault. There's even a few points where you get to hijack a HEAVY combat vehicle and open up a serious can of whoop-ass on the enemy. My only complaint is that there is SO much variety that the game starts to feel a bit segmented sometimes.

The story is RICH and full of plot twists and turns. You run around picking up bits of intelligence that you can view whenever you want which fills in a lot more of the story that you originally were given in the first game. The ending is extremely crazy and it does absolutely nothing to wrap anything from the first game up. Rather, it opens an infinitely large can of worms. I think this publisher intends to keep this game franchise going FOREVER. Heh.

The graphics are quite good and the supernatural stuff is done quite well to terrorize the player. I only have default mobo sound on my rig but the sound and music are both very good. The soundtrack was based on and extended from the first game I think. The enemy bots are okay but there was more freedom in the level design of the first F.E.A.R where you had to really watch your back. In F.E.A.R. 2 I felt like everything was in front of me all the time and I never worried about something sneaking up from the back.

If you liked the first game, you'll love this one even though the ending will probably REALLY freak you out.

They just came out with a new update to F.E.A.R. 2.

It brings back the "head bob off" option that I loved so dearly in the first F.E.A.R

AND it now properly supports _W_I_D_E_ screen gaming. (I've got 3 monitors hooked up to a Matrox TripleHead2Go running games at 3840x1024. It's waaaaay cool)

I think F.E.A.R. 2 was great, it seemed a little short though, maybe because I had so much fun.

I just hope that they come up with a F.E.A.R. 3 that isn't just another excuse to add new characters and a whole bunch of new tech.

I want resolution to the darn story!

Agreed. The game's story has a lot of potential, especially how F.E.A.R. 2 ended. My guess is they'll release some expansions that are only 4-6 hours playtime.

I read somewhere that in the future, game devs won't create new games they will just revamp old ones with new tech. BTW L4D2 is coming out in NOV lol. mmm cookies.

New tech can be good if they can keep the prices down. I think a good story-line is as important as graphics/gameplay. (FFVII for example looks like crap today, but the story makes you play it over and over again) and that's one just one example. I know a lot of games from the past that are still popular because of gameplay and or story, (UTIII gameplay vs. UT2K4) I hope devs keep that in mind.

Ut2k4 had a story? lol I thought it was just: Your in the Unreal tournament, and you want to win.

UT3 tried and failed at a story, which is yet another reason it sucked, how many gigs were wasted on those cheesy CG scenes? I would rather have more maps then a tired storyline and movies.

I find myself burned out on video game stories, how many different versions of aliens, zombies, mutants, zombie mutants and terrorists can there really be? To me, online multiplayer is the reason a games success or failure. It has to have a player base and community to support it. Thats why I love ut2k4, its pure and clean. No nonsense about storylines or dumb plot points. "Ill save her!" ... "No I Will!" ... <bang zoom pow grr argh game over> srry /rant.

Also, new video games are always priced around 50-60$ brand new, then as their popularity fades the price comes down. It's a tried and true market strategy. L4d will be $50 pre-oreder on steam and $60 retail. Developers have to make money too, I don't like new versions of games coming out every year but, u know what? That is what drives the industry, you have to upgrade your shitty PC sometime lol if you want to play new games with new tech.

Sorry, I was referring to ut3's gameplay vs. ut2k4's, not the story on that one. And I have to agree with you Zen, online/multi-player is probably key to current and new game success. The thing that worries me is subscription fees to play online for some games. It's nice that they take care of updates and maintenance on the game servers, but $15-$20 per month for playing in this economy may be tough for a lot of gamers, and it seems more and more of those types of games are being released. I am glad UT has made available all the tools etc for players/admins to create and maintain their own servers, but then again, those players/admins have to pay for their own maintenance as well. I dunno I guess there are both pros and cons for each. But like you said, having a gaming community is vital to a game's success these days. Again Zen, you make some great points. =Þ
