  • ut2k4 stuttering?

does anyone else get the stuttering in ut2k4? has anyone been able to fix it or know of a fix?

At first I thought it was only online that it stutters but I've had several times while testing maps that it does it too...it's kinda aggravating when it happens at the most inopportune time.

The only time i get "stuttering" is when something else on my computer decides to run. What other programs are you running? You should shut down any unnecessary background progs like AIM, MSN, and all those happy little chatters. Antivirus/spyware/firewall programs can cause it sometimes, especially when they want to update. Do you have spybot? If you do get rid of it, as it is a terrible resource hog. Ad-Aware is better.

    1. Latest drivers for ALL your hardware.
    2. Use a separate computer for mapping/modding than for playing UT if possible.
    3. Defragment your hard drive Diskeeper is the best & free for 30 days plenty of time to defrag all your drives.
    4. Optimize every aspect of your PC: Tweakguides.
    5. All else fails... Upgrade/Fresh install :P

    Good luck... young skywalker...

I've had no issues personally. 1GB of RAM minimum and a decent VC is your friend.

My issues in the past were usually related to lack of memory. When you use all available physical memory your pc will use "virtual" memory (page file on your hard drive) instead. During stutter times look at your hard drive light on the pc and see if you are writing/reading from it. Since the physical memory is much faster than reading from a hard drive the "swapping" may result in a stutter.

I now run 2 gig of memory although 1 gig should be sufficient for 2k4. I noticed with the 1 to 2 gig upgrade all my applications seem to load faster and run much smoother due to no "swapping" needed.

Yes at the point at which you run out of RAM you start swapping to the hard drive. This slows things down a lot, not to mention shortens the lifespan of your disk. Also if the swap file size is not sufficient, windows will make it bigger and read/write to it at the same time. This is called disk thrashing, it is very bad, that is why you should set an efficient minimum swap file size of 2-3x your systems physical memory, don't let windows control it! I prefer to match my RAM size cuz I don't want a 2-3 gig swap file lol.

Minion you could actually get rid of your swap file altogether with 2 gigs of ram, but I would just set a swap size of 1024mb even tho you don't really need it.

I have 1.5gb of RAM which should be sufficient, and I use AVG since I'm cheap.

Thanks for the link Eye, I'll read over it and tweak what needs to be tweaked *crosses fingers*

seriously though, I think my issue is because I didn't defrag after installing....something I didn't know was necessary in larger games! guess I'll have to re-install.

I defrag my system all the time(about once a week). From what I read, it helps to defrag after the install to keep all those files together on the disk.

I'm trying the other tweaks first to see if I can get away without a re-install though.

I have a Diamond Radeon X1500 512mb...but it isn't my vid card either...I had the same issues before with my Radeon 8500(128mb) and 9200 Pro(128mb).

Did you turn off AVG auto updates? If you don't it will try and update daily.

Did you defrag with disk keeper? Windows defrag sux it really doesn't do much. Go download disk keeper and run it. It allows you to do a startup defrag before windows loads so as to defrag your swap/page files and other files that cannot be defragged whilst windows is running. Go download Disk keeper!

Sounds like its not a disk issue cuz once ut is loaded its running in ram anyway. Start-run-msconfig to see what services and startup programs you have running. Turn off anything you KNOW to be unnecessary, and FFS be careful!

You may want to run memtest too just to verify you don't have a stick of memory beginning to fail.

Getting disk keeper now, my startup is almost always barren..I like quick booting times

Did just that, no problems with my memory! *scratches it off the list*
