  • NVidia 8800 cards

I have this card on my newegg wish list, hmm.I recieved this e-mail today from my bud who just built a new quadcore.Think I'll find a different vid card.

I really had not played ut much on the new machine been tinkering with
    settings and stuff.
I just checked frame rates in a few maps not really playing them.
Yesterday I played for awhile and began to notice bad "hitching" with
    high
frame rate in a few maps.
Maps that played smooth on my old machine at slower frame rate.
HMMM seems strange ... high frame rate and bad hitching don't seem like
    that
    could happen.
So I Googled "8800 hitching" and got more than I had expected.

Check this 7 page discussion worth reading
    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=23904

Bad deal not sure yet what I'll do.
Seems no problems with UT in Vista . LOL. Oh the irony of it all!!
Gonna try an older driver later today.

      ATI ftw!

EDIT.. I must point out that it is a known fact that if you run your rig with the framerate uncapped and enter a server that has it's framerate capped at 90 fps you will have hitching. Tell him to verify his framerate cap "MaxClientFrameRate=90.000000" in UT2004.ini. This number can be altered and can cause undesireable results online.

oh...that sucks then, I can get 500+fps in instant action and it's smooth as glass.

Sounds like he's pushing UT to it's limits. You can have trouble with extremely new hardware just as with extremely old hardware. Min didn't you have a driver prob at first too? I liken it to putting a REALLY big engine on a frame that cant handle it, sooner or later your gonna twist the frame or crack the motor mounts lol.

That frame rate thing that min talked about is a good idea cuz when you do instant action your essentially running a local server.

But you can push the limits as long as you run vista? Sounds like nvidia and microsoft made some deal. This is bad as the no directx10 for xp.

nvidia and Microsoft... no ya think? Thats exactly what is going to happen, you wont see full performance or quality with a dx10 card unless you have dx10 lol. They want you to spend money. sheety.

I'm glad I waited and picked up the ATI card...I had no idea Nvidia was having these issues. Needless to say I would have been pissed.

You know as technology improves sometimes things have to be dropped to make room for the new. I'm sure the 8800 is a marvelous card and will shine it's brightest in the year to come.

What worries me is that OUR game was one that was on the "we can drop this one" list. I know she's getting older, and there is a new lady on the horizon... but she's still our girl.

Hopefully public outcry will force a driver change that will better handle the dynamic lighting... we'll see. Until then buy ATI.

Isn't ut3 still dx9? Seems all the nvidia high end cards are all dx10.Ati has several high end dx9 cards.I smell some sneaky bostage's here.Who's taken the payolla?

The game developers will be the ones to push it across the DX10 line. But doing so now would be a bad idea...too many players out there are still restricted to DX9 by thier rigs. I have heard no formal answer regarding UT3 and DX10, as I know of know it will be DX9. Which makes you wonder if it's really a good idea to buy a DX10 card now? MY ATI is DX10 compatable, but I doubt it will process any DX10 stuff for quite a while. Especially if it has to see a vista logo to run it.

If you have dx10 you will see dx10 enhancements, the game will know what you have when you install it. if you have dx9 then you will see dx9 level stuff. dx 10 is the high end right now, epic has always been good about being backward compatible, I mean christ, ut2k4 will run on anything with a halfway decent video card and 512mb ram lol.

Microsoft and Sony may have lots of money but the bulk of your revenue is coming from sales, like min said there is still a huge dx9 market so it makes sense that dx9 will be supported and dx10/physx will be optional installs or mods.
