Didn't work with Ubuntu for too long, but I might be able to help somewhat.
[Side note]
Speaking of dual boot, I've only restarted my PC once since starting it at school. That's almost 4 months of straight uptime!
[/Side note]
As for the dual-booting, moo, Ubuntu may not automatically install on a new partition. Follow eye's advice and go to the forums. If you get no help there, you could try to put the disk in and see what choices it gives you. Mind you, I am not responsible for a wiped HDD should you follow this advice. I have (many a time) ruined an OS's file system by pushing buttons and seeing what happens. [Imagines Gir from Invader Zim: What this do, what that do,...]
Best of luck, I hear Ubuntu is really nice if you don't mind not having a root account, which was the reason I went with fedora.
PS. "Partition"
PPS Also, I remember trying to install a Linux OS on a PC with Windows already installed and had much trouble. It's a lot easier when installing Win on a PC with linux installed first. The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the CheeZ.

all you have to do is edit one file to re-enable the root acct. I did it with feisty fawn.... wait... that didn't come out right. I re-enabled the root acct. in feisty fawn. check the man pages.
Yes and ubuntu might not take dual booting nicely, i've only ever dualied with fedora myself.Mind as muscle, Body as energy, Spirit as thought.

yes if you re-install with linux it will format your HDD. I suggest you create multiple partitions as linux uses a different filesystem by default, windows cant read it. I believe that unbuntu uses the riser FS. So you might want to create a fat32 data partition along with the standard linux system partitions.
Why are you re-installing with linux anyway, lost your windows disc huh?Mind as muscle, Body as energy, Spirit as thought.
