  • PC Hosed again

    Man,

My friggin PC is jacked up again and I'm too much of a PC noob to figure out what the deal is. I keep getting the blue screen saying "Windows has detected a problem blah, blah blah"

This sucks... I think it may be my Nvidia card driver.

Backup your data, do a fresh install of windows off the CD and get all your drivers installed as well as all windows updates before you do anything else. That way you can be sure its not a software problem. After you get it up and running, you can make a pristine backup of your system files and drivers.

If you have problems during or after the fresh install then check your hardware.

What are the error codes from the blue screen? 0x0088x80 <--- like that? Write em down or post here and we might be able to research the problem.

Don't worry lad, we'll have you ship shape and bristol fashion in no time

You can also eliminate any driver issues by starting the pc in "Safe Mode". During the boot up process start hitting the "F8" key and you should see a prompt that will ask you how you want to start the pc. Choose "Safe Mode" and it will load minimal drivers for the system and if she boots you may be able to do a "System Restore" back to a time before the corrupt drivers were installed.

PM me if you need my cell number again Hinge, we may be able to work it out over the phone.

oh yeah safe mode. Don't do a system restore, that's just a quick fix. Minion is right isolate the driver causing the problem and yank it or update it.

Or just wipe it and start fresh, thats what i do anymore. Hard drive images rule.

After talking with Hinge on the phone it looks like his HD may be on the way out. He's getting random BSD's with pagefile errors and such. I recommended a new HD and ghosting his current one over to it for the time being until any crucial stored data can be safely backed up and then maybe a reformat when all is safe.

I may be wrong, but I just replaced my bro-in-law's HD and it cured the same symptoms. Both of these hard drives are 4-5 years old which sadly looks like a common time to die.

OK, I bought a new hard drive and mirrored old drive to it. Then removed old HD.
I then updated vid card driver to the latest and greatest... this seems to have dealt with the majority of the blue screen issues.

Now I'm still having issues getting the pc to even recognize when it is on. I have to flip the power supply switch on and off about 3 or 4 times just to get the lights on and fans running.

THEN the motherboard starts a non-stop beeping alarm... when this happens windows will not start. I researched this alarm and found this:

Non-stop long beeps: DRAM not seated properly
Non-stop short beeps: Problems with continuous power supply.
One short beep upon startup means motherboard is functioning properly (which it does)

I'm getting what (by comparison) what seem to be long beeps. I just bought and installed new memory sticks and made sure they are in all the way. Plus I was getting this alarm even before I put the new sticks in, which leads me to believe that it is a power supply issue. The issues I have just starting the pc would seem to support this.

After I finally got the thing to boot windows, I just let it idle for a while to see how long it would go, I checked back after an hour and saw a blue screen. (0x0000008e)

I only use the pc for gaming so it's not really a problem to wipe the entire thing. I use Mac for all my important stuff. I only use pc for gaming.

I think I need to get a new power supply at the very least.

If you want to grab a new power supply I'll help you do a reformat Hinge. If you could post your motherboard model ( I think I remember you saying it was an Abit), I can locate the latest drivers for the board.

If you don't know what you have you can use Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information and post what is under "System Model".

                        Well,

Thanks to Minion, my pc seems to be runnin' smooth, but of course something new is going on... Every file I download from the internet is "corrupt". D/Ling any UT files from servers takes for ever as well, and then counts well past 100%... I dont know what the hell this is.

The only time I've had the maps go past 100% was when they were pulling from server and not on redirect.I noticed the server had actually switched maps and I was still dl'ing in lala land. lol Maybe a bug in your anti virus,I've had bugs actually turn mine off and corrupt my spyware. This last bug I had only trend micro could get rid of it so I actually paid for the program.I've always used free avg or avast then added spybot s/d.Damn porn anyway.lol

The last time that the download went past 100% for me is when I needed to clear the UT cache. Just a thought.

This is new to me, the UT download issue could be an incomplete file on redirect switching over to a direct server download, but I know this IS NOT the case with the files for Sanctuary because I just loaded all of them from redirect on a new UT install for my laptop.

Every file downloaded being corrupt makes it sound like a formatting error on the hard drive, but we just did a reformat and loaded windows with no problem. I'll do a little research and see if I can come up with a viable answer.

**EDIT** I think i may have found the issue. It appears there is an issue with some of the nvidia chipset drivers conflicting with the nvidia firewall. Try disabling the nvidia firewall first and if that doesn't work we'll need to update the chipset drivers Hinge. Here is the page I read... http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum...fm/425167.html

**EDIT EDIT** It appears that faulty RAM can also cause this, you may try removing the present ram and installing just your corsair and see if that fixes anything.
