I been running bit torrent clients for years, have not got anything bad yet,ya just need to watch out what your downloading, look @ the files. For downloading files Torents are alot safer then a p2p program because u don't have morons that change the filename or edit the song so it sounds all messed up in the middle of the song.Alot of people on P2P programs don't know how to run computers that well and there computer get a virus,if they don't know how to remove the virus or there antivirus is not updated(if they evin know how to update there antivirus)They infected and if it's a worm it spreads and they keep downloading and it keep's spreading soon all there file infected infecting others.I personaly use BitLord v1.1 Bittorrent client ,it rocks download 600+ with it,getting 30 Gigs over night(that's if lot's of people on tracker)Ill never go back to p2p becuase u look for software on it's a virus, and getting mp3's well there is people who record mp3's off the radio so it sounds shitty alot of mp3's on p2p programs are shitty quality but Torentz your getting 100% CD quality.
all u need to a trustworthy bit torrent client and trustworthy sites.

Isent limewire connected to the kazza servers? if so this means one server with loads of zombies and millions of viruses infected computers.....

Another program Called Shareazza made by the same people of kazza i think it's p2p and bittorrent client in one program it's copnnects to all p2p servers.im not suggesting to use it but saying the option is there.

        Don't be gay

        1. I play bass, it takes a lot of talent and hard work to make "good" music, never knew until i picked up an instrument. So buy the damn CD, it's worth it to have a backup copy.

        2. Have you ever written any software? It blows hairy chunks and can be just as time consuming as making good music. Buy the damn software, because coding sucks, and its worth it to have a backup copy.

P2P, torrents, whatever. When you download software illegally you run the risk of infection. It's not even virii or worms anymore its rootkits and trojans. Things that don't get picked up in normal scans. Malicious code can have many forms.

The easiest way to not get into trouble is to not put yourself in a position where you will be exposed to it.

That's not directed at you Minus those are just my thoughts on the file sharing thing as a whole.

I agree, but some software is waaaaay overpriced and it actually makes the file sharing situation worse IMHO. I know programmers need to get paid, but to multi-billion dollar companies REALLY need to mark the product up 2 gazillion percent?

Like ms office, everyone at one time or another needs to use word or pp.It should be part of the os.There is way to many examples to begin to list.So there is a choice buy the stupid expensive program and forget that new vid card you need or download it free.Geee, what shall I do? Dah,give me the free.Somebody did pay for it at one time or another,I'm just borrowing it.I suppose you could find a similar freeware that doesn't work for crap.As far as music goes, sometime I buy, sometimes I download free. When I do buy it's usually make 3-4 copies for other people,is that really any different? If I download from wimpy and burn to cd is that any different?(What about Duke?)

<rant> I agree with you 100% Eye, insofar as piracy is concerned... anyone who gets virii from illicit downloading gets no sympathy from me. Support your artists or programmers, register that shareware you use everyday. How'd you like it if your neighbor came over and just grabbed your mower to cut his lawn every week, justifying it by explaining that 'Mowers are too expensive, the mower companies make too much money, etc.' I can't stand the over-restrictive digital rights management that the media companies are inflicting on us now, but I can't really blame them.

Besides, I hate all the a-holes on my node sucking up the bandwidth d'loading yet another crappy album or DVD, just so they can. I met an internet friend once who had thousands of burnt CD's and DVD's, he pretty much kept Kazaa open constantly, getting movies and music, 'just to have it' basically, he spent more time burning and searching and downloading and finding his files, plus chatting, he'd maybe watch a movie a couple times a week. Also had about 76000 mp3 files... I guess I just don't see the point. Maybe I'm old and out of touch, but what did we do before file sharing? BOUGHT the damned music or movies. If your life is so dull that you need 'free' works of others to get you by, I would suggest a library, with multiple forms of media free for the sharing. I know it's not as 'fun' as Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift or The Dukes of Hazzard, but your brain will thank you.

Now I'm not saying I've not taken advantage of an illicit download from time to time, Minion's point about $400-500 software packages is well taken, especially Office in years past. However, anymore there's enough freeware and shareware tools to basically do whatever you need to get done on a computer.

Check out Parlatz's signature for plenty of open source goodness, especially OpenOffice, a non-bloated MSOffice replacement minus all the nasty hooks into Windows (macro virus, anyone?). I've been using OpenOffice since it was StarOffice, probably at least 5 years now, never any problems with any .doc files I've come across. Attachment viruses are also a thing of the past with Mozilla Thunderbird. And I don't think I need to espouse using Firefox to most here, sure, there are very small compatability problems vs. IE, but these are because of Microsoft's mass-imposed standards, not the HTML.

I will not support the RIAA or the MPAA in any fashion at all if possible. They can update their business model and be reasonable or die. It's that simple.

They can both afford to pay their artists very well and still make a killing, but they opt to bend everyone over instead.

Example: Artists collect .04 for every CD sold. Even less if it is bought from iTunes. It does not take a very bright person to figure out who is making the money.

If you like a musician, buy from them directly, or better yet, buy their merchandise & go to their concerts. That is where they make their money.

Don't get me wrong, 'raker, I'm not in support of RIAA or MPAA whatsoever... I think I buy about 3 cds a year from them for like the past 3 or 4 years.

I think a new generation is coming, after the rough spots are worked out... I envision 'artist-cooperatives', basically a bunch of like minded individuals buying webspace, bandwidth, and marketing, and collectively using this to battle the media companies. As soon as the consumer can be weened from Top 40 horseshit, this may happen.

I think if you could get one or two monster acts, like U2 or Dave Matthews Band, to go independent i.e. w/o a major recording contract, produce and market themselves, the majors would go apeshit, and I could buy product again!

I think a lot of musicians will eventually sell their songs from their own websites. This would eliminate the middle man. Check out www.primuslive.com to see the future lol.

Man i gotta shut my mouth, every time i say something we go off topic. I'm sorry I'm such an inflammatory person lol.

Nah man, nothing wrong with discourse brought about by posts in the forum... if anything, I'm the inflammatory one. It's also very educational i.e. you all now know I'm an opinionated SOB, and we've also learned who condones theft of others work.
