I ran avg and now run avast, both are free. These seem to run fine leaving them running,I've never had a problem except when I go into the unknown but they give me that nasty reminder to get the hell out of there.lol They certainly don't slow gaming online down. $.02 worth.

In my opinion (using your example), having an active scan on at ALL times is like wearing a condom at ALL times. It just isn't necessary for the smarter population. Active scanning is for the type of people who wish to not have to think about virus scanning (what I call, lazy people). The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the CheeZ.

Even if you are "wary" it doesn't replace protection. That's like saying If I know a girl real well I don't need to use a condom because by knowing her from school I therefore know her entire sexual history.
That's just bad thinking. Number one you could get her pregnant. Number two people lie all the time, and you may think you can judge someone by their character. But people get fooled every day.
The same goes for viruses (except the pregnant part) this thinking that, "oh I'm perfect and I trust my sources where I download" is BS.
At the end of the day you're gonna do what you wanna do but I do NOT recommend running without AV. $0.03Mind as muscle, Body as energy, Spirit as thought.

personally, I use AVG and turn off active scanning because it often slows my pc down and causes havoc with unrealed. I do however have it auto-scan my pc twice a week during the night. In the last few years I haven't got anything besides minor trojans or the occasional worm, all of them being such a minor threat. I also scan everything I download before opening or running it.
In my opinion, the web media has hyped up the issue of virus and spyware to the point where new pc users are so scared they run out and buy a firewall and anti-virus and spyware software when they could get just as good protection for free. It's a scam.
I used to own Norton SystemWorks 2005 and thought was the best until my subscription ended, I uninstalled it and started using AVG which detected trojans and worms on the first run. I also had a free 6 month trial of Kaspersky which I thought was good but again, after uninstalling and re-installing AVG, same thing. My point is that these anti-virus programs that people pay for are not as elite as these stupid websites advertise.

Don't forget there are those out there that look for browser vulnerabilities and auto install. I was on a reputable UT site the other day with no other pages open, clicked "next page" and one of these attempted to install , it was actually XP 2009. My "bit defender" rendered it useless, but had I not had it running in active scan mode what would have stopped this? And yes, I was using firefox.
It's a never ending battle, I wish you guys the best that don't run an active scan while surfing. My "bit defender" has a "gaming" mode that puts it in an idle state while I game, but other than that my anti-virus is active on all my computers. I can't even tell it's running in the background.

It's a scary compromised world out there.
I install and run our department's copy of Symantec Anti-virus on any Windows machine I use even if it's only for a short-term project."I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."

I don't download anything illegal anymore, no limewire or any of that BS. Download from trusted sources only and don't goto stupid websites and you eliminate 90% of the danger.
But I'm not a big illegal downloader, with the exception of rare music that I can't find in a store I don't download stuff that's not free.
Yes I have gotten maps and stuff that had a virus in them, and it was probably because the maps author runs his PC unprotected. I've seen plenty of legit files from legit sites (fileplanet, filefront) that have virus infections. Not to mention the virus that come along with SPAM.
Hell just the other day I fat fingered a URL and was off by one letter and got a virus warning pop-up. I posted about it here but don't recall the thread it was in.

I agree with you Minion, that there is still a risk of getting something, but for me, I only go to 2-3 websites daily, and about 3 more weekly. Also, I have only 2 firefox extensions on, but both increase its security. The best FF extension I have found is called noscript. It keeps all javascript (and embeds) from running in the browser until you let them. It's annoying at first, but it saves loading time of some websites as well. It even has the option to temporarily allow scripts for the rest of the browser session. The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the CheeZ.

We need to get confirmation from the president to fire the ICBMs, NOW. The virus is spreading more and more everyday. Stop downloading this file. We aren't sure what the virus does yet, but we think that on December 11th, 2012 it will become active and produce a mild EMP from the CPU of every computer it's downloaded onto. This will be like the Ice Age times 2. We cannot let this happen again. Just in case, start making mammoth spears everyone. I'll see if Cuba will assist us.
